Senior Dogs

At The Nest we particularly cherish the older dogs. While most people prefer a younger dog, there are many very good reasons to adopt a senior dog.

Declawing cats

The Nest does not support the declawing of cats.  The procedure for declawing is much more extreme than most people realize.  It is not like trimming a cat’s fingernails, it is more akin to chopping off the end of your fingers, including the entire nail.  You can learn more here:

Puppy Mills

A few years ago, the founder of the nest was involved in getting over 100 dogs out of a puppy mill in southern IN. This experience was an eye opener and is one of the reasons why rescue organizations like ours exist. Whether it is a puppy mill that breeds hundreds of dogs or a smaller back yard breeder, none of them care about the dogs and provide them only enough to survive so they can reproduce and bring money. What many people don’t know is that puppies at pet stores all over the US come from such breeding facilities (see picture below.) The parents of the puppies usually spend all their lives in very small and filthy cages with no socialization and mostly with no veterinary care. When they are too ill or old to reproduce, they are destroyed by the breeder.  We strongly discourage buying dogs or cats from pet stores as in doing so one supports this despicable business.

Crate Training

Many people consider a dog’s confinement to a crate cruel. But we have to look at things from a dog’s point of view. Dogs appreciate the idea of a den. They look at it as a small area that they can call their own and where they can feel perfectly safe. A crate is cruel only if it is physically uncomfortable, or if a dog is left in too often or for too long. Also, the crate is never to be used for or thought of as punishment. No negative association should go along with being crated. Every interaction with the crate should be a pleasant experience. If crating is done correctly, having and using a crate will save you and your dog a lot of trouble. It is useful for housebreaking, bedtime, traveling, and any time you need to confine your dog for a certain period of time. With patience, both puppies and adult dogs can be crate trained.

Welcome to The Nest

The Nest is a not for profit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. We are a group of dedicated volunteers who rescue and foster unwanted, abandoned, neglected, and abused dogs. We are not a shelter. We believe that a dog should be considered a family member and be treated accordingly. Adopting a dog is a big responsibility. Please consider every aspect of your life before making the decision of adopting a new companion.
